A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
